A group of bi/co/multi-vocational Covenant pastors is gathering on Zoom to connect, share resources and encourage one another. Email Lexi for additional information and the Zoom link.

We recognize that "bi-vocational," "co-vocational" and "multi-vocational" might not be terms that we all use, even if we are currently engaging in ministry in addition to maintaining additional responsibilities. As a point of reference, here are some general, unofficial definitions of those terms:

A bi-vocational pastor has two primary vocations: one in ministry and another in a different field/service (paid/unpaid). These pastors often work a separate job to support themselves financially while also fulfilling their pastoral duties. For example, a pastor who also works as a school teacher.

A co-vocational pastor integrates their pastoral work with another vocation in a synergistic manner. The two roles are often complementary, with the skills and experiences from each vocation enhancing the other. An example may be a pastor who runs a community center, where both roles serve the same community and often overlap in purpose and activities.

A multi-vocational pastor is someone who engages in multiple vocations, each distinct and potentially unrelated, while also fulfilling their pastoral responsibilities. This type of pastor manages several roles, which may include a combination of ministry, secular employment, and other commitments, often leading to a broad and diverse skill set. For example, a pastor who also works as a part-time consultant, a freelance writer, and volunteers at a local non-profit organization. These various roles allow the pastor to draw on a wide range of experiences and insights to enrich their ministry.
